Forget about our picks. Jay Rood, Race and Sports Book director at MGM Mirage, tells us what Vegas is thinking.
What are the betting lines?
Rood: We opened it initially with Lakers at minus two dollars and Boston plus-$1.70. We started taking Boston money. People started taking the Celtics. When we got down to minus-$1.80, it stopped but it was sort of one-sided. It's a little bit in favor of Boston at probably 60% and 40% picking the Lakers at that price. Our prop to win the exact number of games, a lot of people are picking Lakers in six. It's kind of counter productive to what they're doing on the other side. I think the series price is being bet by some of your more serious professional betters and they like the plus-$1.70. They thought it was good value for a series between two teams that are playing pretty well right now. The general public in this area is pretty Laker oriented so we get a lot of general public money on the Lakers. That's why I'm pretty sure that prop is trending that right way.
What are the reasons more betters are picking Boston for the series?
Rood: Defensively, that's what they're looking at. Whenever the Lakers match up with the Celtics, it's never a at score of 120-117. That's swaying most people to side with the Celtics.
What's the outlook on the first game?
Rood: They're betting the Lakers in the first game a little bit and playing the 5 1/2 points. We're getting a ton of money on the money line on Boston as well. We're in a situation where we want the Lakers to win, but we don't want them to cover six points. We're hoping for a nice, tight game. The public is looking for a blowout one way or another, either with the moneyline going to Boston or the Lakers. The trend definitely is once they see Game one, they usually react to what they see. That's where I come up with the Game 2 line, I'll have to definitely take all of that into consideration.
How do the wagers compare from the 2010 Finals to the 2008 Finals?
Rood: The 2008 Finals, they were squarely on the Lakers. Not many people gave Boston a chance. This changed a little bit.
How much more activity is there because the Lakers and Celtics are in the Finals?
Rood: "We have so many people from so many different areas. These two teams are very international. Our corporation is a very international corporation so we do get quite a few guests from overseas when they're down here. They come down and they inquire and they watch the games and they make a bet on it. So from our standpoint, it's great to have two high profile teams that have an international following. The Cleveland Cavaliers and Orlando Magic don't have a huge following internationally. People know them obviously because it's the NBA but it's not the same. We've got the World Cup getting ready to go so we have people from all over the world hanging around the sports books now. This is probably the best matchup we could've hoped for."
